A barn fire at Karen and Blair Cudmore’ Heartland Farms was called “fatal” by the news media – for claiming the lives of not only horses but a groom who was trying to save them. According to an article in the Chronicle of the Horse website, “The fire started around 6:30 a.m. on Feb. 3, and firefighters worked until the afternoon to extinguish it. About 120 people battled difficult conditions in single-degree weather.”
Heartland Farms was a training facility for Grand Prix rider Karen Cudmore and her family, and was also home to their breeding operation. Karen currently competes a homebred, Coneja, at Grand Prix.
Money is being raised to help with the aftermath. This press release just came out with one way to donate:
Omaha Equestrian Foundation has added a special designation on its website’s donation page to benefit Heartland Farms following last week’s devastating fire. All donations are tax deductible and will go directly to the Heartland Farms family during this difficult time. Omaha Equestrian Foundation is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization and donations are tax deductible.
